Street Music

If music feeds your soul, I'd like to encourage you (once again!) to see PASSIONE at The Plimoth Cinema. It's on only til 9.29, just 6 more opportunities, since it shows @ 4:30 and 7PM. It's all music, movement, art and absolutely alive - it mixes fado, rai, flamenco, jazz and portrays vividly how they all mix it up together to create a musical portrait of Naples. The following clips give an idea of the energy of the film:
Director John Turturro and some excerpts
Pistol Packin Mama  - great performance with many characters
Indifferentemente by Misia

Music on the street can be like these bursts of color suddenly seen in a sidewalk crack. It's great to come around a corner and hear surprising sound and music. Sometimes Plymouth's streets do breathe music....we ran into Hayley, singer, student and sometime barista at Kiskadee with a little crowd at the bottom of Coles Hill.
Haley
Town Brook

On Saturday night, Trillium, an open mike at Middle Street Music had a good crowd inside, but I guess they will hold their last one on Saturday, 10.29.

On many days and some nights, pass by The Metacomet, 58C Main Street (Plymouth) to hear a welcome blast of music - anyone from  Rahsaan Roland Kirk to CSNY - John keeps a steady stream of records/sound going while people browse books in his shop. Live music is an occasional treat.
Downy Woodpecker

Lots of nature sounds, too - their own music - from Town Brook and the random warbler or woodpecker. Hope that there will be much more music on the streets...

Early bird...gets to see birds and much more~

Scusset Beach
Path to Scusset Beach
What time period am I in?
Great Blue Heron/Neck Elongated

Great Blue/No neck

Up early to catch the sunsight (or the Earth revolving...as Bucky Fuller said, "The sun never sets or goes down. The sun eclipses and the correct term would be that we sunsight in the morning and sunclipse in the evening.").

Scusset Beach...a treat any time of the day, but really nice when few people are around.

Coming back to Plymouth, we saw turkeys - parents and 3 chicks crossing the road, oxen in a field, and great blue herons in The Ellisville Marsh (in Ellisville Harbor State Park.) Thanks to The Friends of Ellisville for their efforts to restore the marsh!

Can't really beat seeing two great blue herons passing not 30 feet above us as a way to start the day!

Distant Mirrors by Ellen Driscoll
"The sculpture Distant Mirrors floats in the Providence canal; an archipelago of forms. The largest of these is a floating map of the 52 plots of land apportioned by Roger Williams to those who shared his conviction that church and state should be separate. This land, given to Williams under favorable terms by the Narragansetts, was distributed by him in such a way that no one would have advantage, or better land or water access, than any one else.
Sadly, this utopian community was not immune from the economic and political pressures of it's time - stressed from within by individual profit seeking, and from without by increasing animosities caused by white colonization of native populations -- the community was eventually destroyed -- acting as a haunting tale for our own time."

Tonite's event will include the official "launch" of the floating sculptures that constitute the piece as well as a "geographical tour" of the history behind and the local and global significance of Distant Mirrors by lead artist Ellen Driscoll and one of her collaborators on the project, Jennifer Smith.

Birds, Brewster Gardens and...Banksy?

Nature/Bird walk @
Nelson Beach, Plymouth
A few scenes from the weekend in Plymouth MA...click any image to see it bigger.

B is for Birding~
The Audubon Society's John Galluzzo (Adult Education Coordinator, South Shore Sanctuaries) led a bird walk along the rail trail/bike path near Nelson Beach on Saturday, 9.10. He pointed out an osprey nest (and its inhabitant), cormorants, swans, plovers and many more feathered creatures.
Osprey coming in for a landing
These walks are great whether you're a birder or someone (like me) who just loves to walk in nature.

John will lead a couple of other free Plymouth bird walks later in the Winter, and I highly recommend them. You need to register by calling the society (9AM - 4PM, M - F): 781.837.9400

And then there's the Saturday Farmers Market on the courthouse lawn and a walk down North Street to see Ric Cone and his Old North St. Curiosity Shop.
Farmers Market - Plymouth
And...could it be...Banksy?

Banksy?
"Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter.
His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world." (more from wikipedia).

There's always much more to do and see than there is time to do it~

Don't call me ;-)

Well, if you're like a lot of people in Plymouth, you've gotten that cell phone number email today. Most of the info is just not true.

Here's info from The Federal Trade Commission's (Do Not Call registry) site:
"Cell Phones
You may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers."

If you want to, you can register online, but as it mentions, it's not necessary.

Grants, Calls for Art, Deadlines

Saw this license plate yesterday in downtown Plymouth. And, because I love the idea of artists creating and receiving monies/attention for their efforts, let's talk about grants and calls for art! (it's a long post with lots of information, but could be helpful to artists.)

OK, now grants...
The MA Cultural Council (MCC) allocates money to many local arts councils in MA, which local councils award, based on proposals sent in to them.
Postmark deadline: Oct.15, 2011
Application guidelines
Send finished/filled in applications to local council(s) directly:
Plymouth Cultural Council, P.O. Box 1785, Plymouth, MA 02362-1785

From the MCC site:
"Individuals, schools, and cultural organizations are eligible to apply for project support from their local council."
"...grants from LCCs are reimbursement-based. (The applicant expends their own money, and if approved for a grant, then submits paperwork for reimbursement.)"

Now what I find kind of curious is that just one of the local grants (Plymouth Cultural Council) was awarded to an individual artist last year. (See link to article about this person, farther down.) Is this because we haven't applied, haven't had "worthy" projects, filled out the forms wrong? Let's rectify that!

Local (Plymouth, MA) council guidelines and forms
The Plymouth Cultural Council (PCC) has had $9080 allocated for the fiscal year. You can see other 2011 town allocations here.

You may attend an info meeting with MCC representatives to get info on the grants and how to fill out forms. Here's one:
Mashpee: Tues., Oct. 4
Registration/Networking - 6:00 PM
Workshop - 6:30-8:00 PM
Mashpee Public Library, 64 Steeple St., Mashpee, MA
To register/workshop info at top right at link.

Maybe we could also discuss this informally, artist to artist, at the library meeting on 9.19?

If your project/proposal would benefit the public in different towns, apply to those local councils too! It seems that many of the organizations have been awarded monies from many surrounding towns. So consider these (and other towns) if you can show that your projects etc would benefit them...check out their funding guidelines, mailing addresses and past awards. Very enlightening!  ;-)

Kingston Cultural Council
Bourne
Carver
Duxbury
Middleborough
Pembroke
Wareham

Maybe you'd find it informative to read about one individual who has been awarded monies from many local cultural councils, not necessarily in the town where he resides. (Note: the article is about the programs he presents - I just happened to notice in looking at various towns' award recipients, that this person, who was awarded money from the Plymouth Cultural Council, also received money from many other local councils.)

This year, they're awarding the following:
Drawing, Painting, and Traditional Arts
Online application available: August 15, 2011
Application deadline: October 7, 2011
Grants announced by February 2012

Choreography, Fiction/Creative Nonfiction, and Poetry
Online application available: December 15, 2011
Application deadline: January 30, 2012
Grants announced by June 2012

Good luck!

Welcome~

PACE is a resource and information site for all who are interested in engaging with the arts and cultural life of Plymouth, MA and surrounding areas.

We'll present a holistic view of all that we see and that we think might be of interest to others.

Whether you're an artist/maker or someone who actively seeks out activities and events that enrich your life, you can probably find what you're looking for. If you don't, please email us to suggest an addition!

When we moved to Plymouth, MA from the Boston, MA area, we searched out people and activities to continue and expand the art oriented life we lived prior to landing in Plymouth. Plymouth is BIG - it's not always easy to find what you're looking for, filtered in a way that is similar to how one experiences life.

So, this blog (and its related site, coming later in September) offers art, life and resources in and near Plymouth filtered through artists eyes. We hope that you'll suggest people and places for us to visit so that we can check them out and share them here and on the PACE site.

This site reflects the views of Linda Scharf and Peter Gold. We're artists, activists, and presenters.
